Celebrations and Farewells

July 2, 2019

During the weekend of June 22-23, we held our RMC debriefing retreat.  This time is set aside each year to allow the RMC volunteers to reflect back over their year, prepare them for the transition of life after RMC, and of course have some fun! The first day, we had the opportunity to look back and remember the growth filled moments from the year and practice sharing our story. We also connected with RMC alum, Emily Guilbert (’16-’17) who was in town visiting from Georgia and joined us for lunch.  The day concluded with a fun trip into the city with community members and friends for the Chinese Lantern Festival!

Our debriefing retreat officially concluded with our Closing Mass of Thanksgiving on Monday evening. Many co-workers, supervisors, associates, Sisters and friends were in attendance to celebrate Jackie and wish her well on her next journey. During the Mass, we had the privilege of hearing Jackie’s reflection on her time as an RMC: “My experience this year made me realize that I want to pursue a career where I can interact with patients on a collaborative interdisciplinary team. In the ICU, I found so much joy in being part of a patient’s journey to recovery – watching them get out of bed for the first time or walk a lap around the unit always fills my heart with happiness.”  You can read her full reflection here.

Later that week, the celebration continued with a community BBQ.  This event was the final community dinner and prayer for Jackie.  Many of the Sisters joined as well as Jackie’s mom who visited from California.  It was the perfect summer night for a BBQ, swimming and cornhole!

Then, as the week came to a close, it was time to say our final farewell to Jackie on Sunday, June 30 as she made her way to Center City, Philadelphia to begin the next chapter of her life as a Rehab Therapy Assistant with Magee Rehabilitation Hospital. We wish Jackie all the best on this new endeavor!

Goodbyes are never easy, yet we find comfort in the fact that RMC’s are always a part of the Redeemer family long after their volunteer year. As we prepare for the start of another RMC year, stay tuned to learn who will be joining us as an RMC in August!
