RMC Ministries

To visit the sick, to come to their aid with spiritual and physical assistance is certainly one of the most beautiful works of mercy. In this condition, where the person is unable to help oneself, it must be most consoling to the person to have compassionate persons approach one’s sickbed and instill consolation and courage, and through their sympathy and careful nursing, to lessen one’s sufferings as much as possible.”
Blessed Alphonse Maria Eppinger, Founder of the Sisters of the Redeemer

Redeemer Ministry Corps volunteers serve in the ministries of the Sisters of the Redeemer. This includes health care (hospital, hospice, cancer center, assisted living home, outpatient care, women’s health center), a transitional housing program for women and children and a community garden initiative. Through our placements within the Sisters’ ministries, we strive to be a caring, comforting and healing presence to vulnerable populations.

RMC volunteers have the option to split their time between two different ministries. This allows them to address multiple needs within our ministries while gaining valuable experience. For example, a volunteer with an interest in healthcare might serve 3 days a week as a nursing assistant and 2 days a week as a hospice visitor. Please be assured that within all of our sites, supervision is provided throughout the year.

In 1928, the Sisters of the Redeemer began their visiting nurse ministry in the heart of Philadelphia. From this modest beginning, the Sisters’ mission to care, comfort and heal continued to grow through many programs, services, and facilities. Holy Redeemer Hospital was established in 1959, and from this grew Holy Redeemer Health System, which serves the Greater Philadelphia Area in Home Care, Health Care and Life Care.

Redeemer Ministry Corps volunteers carry on the Sisters’ tradition of caring, comforting and healing through service in healthcare.

Environmental Care

The Redeemer Valley Farm, a ministry of the Sisters of the Redeemer, provides individual plots and a large community-supported garden. Its purpose is to benefit the community by growing nourishing, locally-grown food, by sharing what we have gained from our labors and experiences, by education and collaboration with Holy Redeemer Health System and other local organizations while benefiting the earth through sustainable growing practices.

The Garden Coordinator is involved with all aspects of garden preparation and maintenance and assists with coordinating garden volunteers.

We also have a three-week Summer Farm Internship for students 18 and older. Learn more, here.
